Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language
by Lorrin Andrews

A faithful reproduction of Andrews' work, this edition includes introductions by Noenoe K. Silva, Ph.D. and Albert J. Shutz, Ph.D. The roots of A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language go back to the late 1820s, when Lorrin Andrews arrived in Hawai'i and began a systematic study of Hawaiian, which grew into a love of the language that was to continue for forty years. In 1865, Lorrin Andrews' A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language was produced with its purpose of assisting speakers using a living language. This resourceful dictionary provides a rare and valuable glimpse into mid-nineteenth century Hawaiian culture and thought. To preserve authenticity of the original dictionary, the content has not been changed, with the exception of obvious English misspellings, therefore the okina (distinguishing glottal stops) and the kahako (distinguishing long vowels) used in present day are not included in the book.

Hawaiian Names English Names
by Eileen M. Root
If you want to find your Hawaiian name or give your child or pet a Hawaiian name then this is the book!  Today most people choose a name because "it sounds nice". In ancient Hawaii, and indeed in most traditional societies a name involved more than its sound.  A name (inoa) was a possession, an influence for good or evil and perhaps a part of a societies history. Ones inoa was a precious personal possession and also a force in its own right. Although a person possessed his or her name, he or she was also possessed by the name. Once spoken, the inoa assumed a mystical existence and the power to help or harm the bearer. And, so went the belief, the more a name was spoken, the more powerful it came, and the more powerful the influence - good or evil.
